What Is Tech Neck

Tech neck (also called text neck) is a repetitive stress injury to the cervical spine caused by prolonged forward head posture during screen use. The term was coined by Dr. Dean Fishman in 2008 and has become the dominant postural complaint of the digital age.

The mechanism is straightforward: every degree of forward head tilt increases the effective weight on the cervical spine. Your neck muscles, ligaments, and discs are designed to support 10-12 pounds. When you look down at a phone at 45-60 degrees, they are supporting 49-60 pounds.

Over time, this leads to cervical disc degeneration, loss of the normal lordotic curve, muscle fatigue and trigger points, tension headaches, and reduced lung capacity (the forward posture compresses the thorax).

Device-Specific Risk

Smartphones create the worst angles. Most people hold phones at lap or chest level, requiring 45-60 degrees of neck flexion. Research found that using a smartphone for more than 4 hours per day significantly reduces CVA.

Laptops are the second worst because the screen and keyboard are at the same height. This forces either neck flexion (to see the screen) or shoulder elevation (to type on a raised keyboard). There is no good solution without an external keyboard or monitor.

Desktop monitors are the safest option when positioned correctly. With the top of the screen at eye level and the monitor at arm's length, neck flexion is minimal.

    1. Lie on your back without a pillow.

    1. Lie on your back with a small towel roll under your neck.
    2. Nod your chin very slightly (3mm movement) — like saying "yes" very slowly.
    3. Feel the deep muscles at the front of your throat engage.
    4. Hold for 10 seconds.

    Targets the longus capitis and longus colli, which are weak in tech neck. These deep stabilizers hold your head in proper alignment over your spine.

    1. Sit with hands behind your head.
    2. Arch your upper back over the chair backrest.
    3. Look toward the ceiling as you extend.
