What happened to Lumo Lift

On 29 June 2018, Lumo Bodytech entered an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors — an insolvency process in which a company hands its assets to an assignee to be liquidated. Operations stopped immediately. The company no longer promoted, manufactured, or sold any product, orders and pre-orders went unfulfilled, and warranty and software support ended at the same moment.

Customers kept access to the companion app for roughly nine months afterwards. Then it went dark. Lumo Bodytech's intellectual property was acquired by Superflex, which rebranded itself as Seismic and folded Lumo's posture and activity data into its own suit-control algorithms; several members of Lumo's machine learning team moved across with the assets.

What the Upright GO 2 gets right

It would be easy to dismiss the whole category, but the GO 2 does several things genuinely well, and it is a reasonable purchase for the right person.

  • The core mechanic works. An immediate physical buzz the moment you slump is a far stronger interrupt than a notification you can dismiss without reading. Behaviour change needs a cue that is hard to ignore, and a vibration against your spine qualifies.
  • Battery life is genuinely good. Around 30 hours of active use on a roughly three-hour charge translates to several days of desk work between top-ups.
  • It is small and discreet. At 1.89 × 1.14 × 0.34 inches it disappears under a shirt, which matters if you plan to wear it at work.
  • Training mode and tracking mode are a smart split. Training mode buzzes to correct you; tracking mode silently logs. Being able to gather baseline data without being nagged is a sound bit of product design.
  • It is still supported. After the Lumo story, an actively maintained app is not a small thing.

Where the Upright GO 2 falls short

  • The adhesive is a consumable. Each pad survives roughly three to ten applications before it stops gripping. Ten ship in the box; after that it is a recurring cost for as long as you use the device.
  • Skin comfort is inconsistent. The adhesive is silicone-based and marketed as suitable even for people prone to adhesive allergies, but reviewers report itching developing around the one-week mark, body hair catching in the pad, and poor adhesion on sweaty skin. If you are warm-natured or plan to wear it at the gym, budget for that.
  • Reliability complaints recur. Reports of the device powering off unexpectedly, failing to vibrate when it should, and dropping its Bluetooth connection show up consistently enough across independent reviews to be worth flagging.
  • The necklace is a partial fix. The $19.95 silicone necklace sidesteps the adhesive entirely and is more comfortable, but it attracts dirt and discolours over time in lighter colours.

The limitation both devices share

This is the part most comparisons skip, and it matters more than any spec in the table above.

A sensor stuck between your shoulder blades measures one thing: the angle of that patch of skin relative to gravity. Everything the app tells you is inferred from that single number. As reviewers have noted, the device tracks the incline of the unit attached to your back — not whether the rest of your back is actually straight.

That produces three concrete blind spots:

  • It cannot see your head. Forward head posture — the classic desk-work problem — is clinically assessed using the craniovertebral angle, which is measured between the ear and the seventh cervical vertebra. A sensor below both cannot compute it. You can hold a textbook thoracic position while your head juts six inches forward, and the device will report that you are doing well.
  • It cannot see asymmetry. One shoulder riding higher than the other does not reliably change the tilt of a centre-line sensor, so uneven shoulders are effectively invisible to it.
  • It cannot tell leaning from slouching. Hinge forward from the hips with a completely neutral spine — reaching for a mug, reading something on the desk — and the sensor registers the same angular change as a genuine slump. Reviewers describe exactly this: an inability to distinguish good posture from simply leaning forward.

None of this is a firmware bug that a future update fixes. It is a consequence of measuring one point with one accelerometer. Lumo Lift had the same constraint from a different position on the body, which is why the two devices, for all their differences in status and support, were solving the problem the same way.

If you want a wearable anyway

There is a real case for one, and it is worth stating plainly: a wearable goes where you go. It keeps working while you are standing at a counter, walking to a meeting, cooking, or in the gym. No camera-based system can do that. If your posture problem is not specifically a desk problem, the wearable is the right tool and the rest of this page is beside the point.

Between the two current models: choose the GO 2 if you want the second sensor, advanced movement detection, and roughly double the battery life — worth the extra $40 if you intend to wear it daily. Choose the GO S if you mainly want the buzz-when-you-slouch mechanic and would rather spend $59.95 finding out whether you will stick with it.

The other approach: webcam posture tracking
